Save our Forests

Over 200 Bristol South residents have got in touch with their local MP as campaigning to save England’s forests intensifies.  Bristol South MP Dawn Primarolo has today spoken out against the plans, which would see forestry land in England sold off.

Commenting, Dawn said:

“Bristol South residents are rightly outraged by the Tory-led Government’s proposals.  Our forests are part of our natural heritage and should be spared from the sort of shabby privatisation this Government seems to favour.  Unfortunately, the Conservatives have form on this – from 1981 to 1984 they sold over 70,000 hectares of woodlands.  I’ve written to the Environment Secretary to ask her not to repeat the same mistake.  Once our forests are lost, they are gone forever.  Preserving our forests currently costs each of us just 30 pence a year – surely that’s worth it given the countless hours of enjoyment they bring to families all over the country and their clear environmental benefit.”
“A Parliamentary debate scheduled for tomorrow could stop the plans in their tracks.  I certainly hope that the Lib Dems will have the courage to back Labour MPs and oppose these plans.  Locally, the Parks and Green Spaces sell-off have left the Lib Dems’ environmental credentials in tatters.  They need to stand up for our forests and join with Labour against this Tory-led sell off.”
