Dawn Primarolo Elected Deputy Speaker

Following an election of all Members of Parliament, Dawn Primarolo has been elected as a Deputy Speaker.  Dawn received the support of 128 MPs in an election in Westminster  this morning.
As well as receiving backing from former Labour Ministers Margaret Beckett, Alan Johnson, Chris Bryant, Karen Buck and David Lammy, Dawn was also nominated by Conservative MPs Charlotte Leslie and Michael Fallon, and Lib Dem MP Jo Swinson.  The new role will require Dawn to work with politicians of all sides, as she takes the Chair in the House of Commons as a Deputy to Speaker John Bercow.

Commenting after the election, Dawn said:

“I am delighted to have received the support of so many colleagues.  In over 20 years as an MP, I have been able to work with politicians of all parties.  While we should have robust disagreements where necessary, I think most people are sick and tired of the Punch and Judy politics that we see today.  I want to work with all MPs to improve the nature of the debates in the House of Commons.

“Politics badly needs reforming, and I look forward to playing my part.  My primary concern, as ever, will be to continue working for the residents of Bristol South. I can assure everyone in Bristol South that I will continue to stand up for our community.  Unlike the Speaker, who has to remain neutral at all times, I am free to campaign politically outside of Parliament, and will certainly continue to do so.”

Mr Speaker, Rt Hon John Bercow MP, added:

“I am delighted that Dawn Primarolo has been elected Deputy Speaker.  She brings huge experience to the role, great patience and the advantage of being popular on both sides of the House. Of course, we first met twenty years ago, when I stood against Dawn in Bristol South.  We had robust exchanges, but our personal relationship was always cordial. Since I was elected in 1997, I have got to know Dawn very well.  I like her, respect her and look forward to working with her in the years ahead. The people of Bristol South can be very proud of their MP.”
