Celebrating Ashton Park's New School Buildings

Dawn Primarolo MP opened the new teaching block at Ashton Park School this morning.  The £18 million facility provides a state-of-the-art learning environment, and was funded by the previous Labour Government’s Building Schools for the Future programme.

In her speech, Dawn paid tribute to Headteacher Chris Gardner, who joined Ashton Park in 1995.  His tenure has seen a sustained improvement in the school’s results.  Afterwards Dawn, who was joined by Lord Mayor and Bedminster Councillor Colin Smith and Southville Councillor Sean Beynon, said:

“Ashton Park School’s new facilities are fantastic.  My son went to school there, and the transformation from his school days really is incredible.  The rebuild was possible thanks to the previous Labour Government’s Building Schools for the Future programme.  Unfortunately, as you may have seen in the media, the new Government have cut the Building Schools for the Future programme.  Thankfully, Bristol was well on the way to completing all of its schools before the election, so there was no time for the Government to cut here.

“The new facilities are only a part of a continuing improving picture at Ashton Park.  GCSE and Post 16 results have increased again, and the school (along with Luckwell Primary, Ashton Vale Primary and Compass Point) is now working in partnership with the Cooperative group.  A recent Ofsted report showed that the school is rated ‘Good’.  This is great news, and it’s no surprise that Ashton Park has had more applications than places for some years now.”

Sean, who was a pupil at Ashton Park, said:

“The new building is superb.  It’s only looking at the facilities now that makes me realise that we took an old, tired, building for granted in the past.  Now, thankfully, the students at Ashton Park will be able to get used to learning in a totally different environment.  People who criticise Government spending, or PFI projects, should come along to schools like Ashton Park and see what’s been achieved.”
