MP and councillor help 'Read a Million Words'

Dawn Primarolo and Helen Holland visit Teyfant School

This lunchtime, Bristol South MP, Dawn Primarolo, and local councillor, Helen Holland, joined Teyfant School children to help them 'Read a Million Words'.

Dawn and Helen are just the latest to visit the Hartcliffe school and lend their support to this project, which promotes reading among children and their parents.

Speaking shortly after reading 'Manda's Adventure' to a group of nursery children, Helen said: "As the local councillor I'm in and out of the school all the time, so it was great to be able to sit down with the kids and do my bit to introduce them to the joys of reading. I look forward to supporting the other events the school has planned for next year".

Dawn, who read 'Mess Monsters' and 'Wide Awake Jake' added: "The children seemed really gripped by the stories, and told me enthusiastically about how, yesterday, they were read bedtime stories - in their pyjamas and slippers! It's excellent to see how this great school is, with much imagination, encouraging local children to pick up a book and start reading".

Read a Million Words is a ground-breaking project, which sets a goal for every child to read a million words in a year. Depending upon age and ability, the million words target can be achieved by either individuals or class groups.
