Dawn joins Bristol trade justice campaigners

Drums mark challenges - and progress - one year after Gleneagles

On Saturday 8 July, Dawn Primarolo joined fellow Labour MPs Roger Berry, Kerry McCarthy and Doug Naysmith to beat out a loud message of support for the campaign for fairer world trade.

The event, organised by Christian Aid as part of their 'The Beat Goes On' campaign, was held to mark the first anniversary of the G8 summit declaration on aid, debt and trade.

Speaking after the event, Dawn said: "A year ago, the Labour Government asked the leaders of the industrialised world to help the poorest people in the world. as a result at the G8 meeting in Gleneagles, the UK got agreement to cancel the debt of the poorest countries, to increase international aid by $50 billion over ten years, and to increase the efforts to stop the spread of preventable diseases like AIDS, TB and Malaria".

"One year on it is vital that we keep the pressure up on the world leaders to support the UK's efforts to meet these commitments and go further, so I very much welcome the opportunity to join Christian Aid in keeping these issues high on the political agenda".
